Radial Model (2017, collaboration with Fred Schmalz)

One aspect of my collaborative practice with Fred Schmalz includes the creation of visual poems that deploy textual intervention, interpretation, and extrapolation on found texts and graphics.

In The Radial Model, we intervened in an early 1950s Chicago Planning Commission document that originally described a theoretical “Geographic Pattern of Redevelopment” of the city. Interested in the ways in which the graphic expressed the assumptions and self-fulfilling aspects of urban design, we inserted an alternate text that examines the life cycle of the city through episodes of demolition and construction, connecting these cycles to human sustenance and resilience.
