Cultivation Cycles in a Metropolitan Area (2017, collaboration with Fred Schmalz)
One aspect of my collaborative practice with Fred Schmalz includes the creation of visual poems that deploy textual intervention, interpretation, and extrapolation on found texts and graphics.
Cultivation Cycles in a Metropolitan Area is based on a diagram found in a commissioned study on urban development in 20th Century Chicago describing “The Influence of Housing in the Structure of a Metropolitan Area.”
Attracted to the original document’s utter illegibility as an infographic, we retained elements of the visual while re-imagining the textual element as a relationship between urban development and fruit production standing in as dynamics of the cultivation cycle.
